Drive US-2
The Stevens Pass route is the scenic argument: the tiny climbing-town of Index worth a glance off the highway, then the Skykomish River, granite walls, and Deception Falls a two-minute leg-stretch further on.
Front Street
The full Bavarian streetscape. München Haus for brats and a liter on the biergarten deck; the Gingerbread Factory for the kitsch course.
Pick your afternoon
Summer: float the Wenatchee River or walk the Icicle Gorge loop. Shoulder season: wine tasting rooms line the village. Connoisseurs of the absurd: the Nutcracker Museum has over 7,000 of them.
Dinner and the drive home
Or stay for the lights — from Thanksgiving through February the village glows nightly, and it is genuinely, unironically magical.
Need to know
- December weekends are mobbed — hotels book out months ahead and Front Street becomes a slow shuffle. Go midweek for lights with elbow room.
- Loop option: go out via US-2, return via Blewett Pass and I-90 to make it a circle drive.
- Wenatchee is 20 minutes further down US-2 — the 'Apple Capital,' with Ohme Gardens and a Columbia River waterfront path. Bolt it onto the end of a Leavenworth day if you're not ready to turn around.
- Winter travel over Stevens Pass can require chains — check WSDOT pass reports before leaving.
