Beyond the City β 3β4 HR + FERRY Β· LONG DAY / OVERNIGHT
San Juan Islands
An archipelago where the resident orcas outrank everyone, the pace drops to island time the moment you drive aboard, and the hardest decision of the day is lavender farm versus alpaca farm. The one trip on this list that truly argues for an overnight.

The Plan
Drive to Anacortes
Ninety minutes north. Vehicle reservations (Save A Spot, WSDOT) are close to mandatory in summer β walk-ons are always flexible if you'd rather rent wheels on-island.
Ferry to Friday Harbor
About an hour threading the archipelago β arguably the prettiest ferry run in the Lower 48. Deck seats, obviously.
Friday Harbor
Compact, walkable harbor town: the Whale Museum to calibrate your orca knowledge, then coffee on the docks.
Lime Kiln Point
'Whale Watch Park' β the best shore-based orca viewing in the world. Summer afternoons with the lighthouse in frame and a picnic is the platonic San Juans experience.
Farms and roadside stands
Pelindaba Lavender's purple fields, San Juan Vineyard, honesty-box farm stands. Then the 17:30-ish boat β or, wisely, your inn.
Need to know
- Do the math honestly: it's a 15+ hour round trip as a day trip. An overnight on San Juan or Orcas Island transforms it.
- Orcas Island option: Moran State Park and the Mount Constitution summit road β the best viewpoint in the entire archipelago.
- Whale-watching boats run from Friday Harbor if you want guaranteed proximity; shore viewing at Lime Kiln is free and ethically unbeatable.
- Summer vehicle ferries sell out. Reserve the moment plans firm up, or go as a walk-on and rent a bike or moped in Friday Harbor.
