Beyond the City β 1.5 HR DRIVE Β· HALF TO FULL DAY
La Conner & the Skagit Valley
An hour and a half north, a 19th-century waterfront village sits on the Swinomish Channel surrounded by some of the flattest, most fertile farmland in the state β which for a few weeks each April erupts into stripes of tulips running to the horizon.

The Plan
Drive north on I-5
About 90 minutes to La Conner, with a short detour off the freeway through farmland.
First Street & Pioneer Park
Waterfront shops and galleries along the Swinomish Channel, with Pioneer Park's view of the Rainbow Bridge as the town's postcard shot.
The tulip fields
In April, Roozengaarde and Tulip Town are a ten-minute drive out of town β rows of color running to the Cascade foothills. Check each farm's bloom map before you go; timing shifts with the weather.
Lunch on the channel
Waterfront tables looking out at fishing boats and the bridge.
Detour to Bow-Edison
A blink of a food village on the way back: Breadfarm's bakery case, Taylor Shellfish's farm stand, and Slough Food's deli counter.
Chuckanut Drive south
Trade the freeway for the scenic route: a cliffside road above Samish Bay with pull-offs at Larrabee State Park before rejoining I-5.
Need to know
- Tulip season is genuinely peak: book ahead, expect traffic on weekends, and check the festival's bloom estimate before committing to a date β a late cold snap can push it back a week or two.
- La Conner outside tulip season is still a pleasant half-day: the channel walk, galleries, and shops don't need flowers to justify the drive.
- Chuckanut Drive is slower than I-5 but the better story β build in the extra 20β30 minutes on the way home rather than the way up.
- Bow-Edison is easy to miss: it's a few blocks of Chuckanut Drive proper, not a marked town center.
Common questions
When is the best time to visit La Conner for tulips?
Peak bloom is typically early-to-mid April during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, though exact timing shifts year to year with the weather β check the festival's bloom map before driving up.
How far is La Conner from Seattle?
About 1.5 hours north via I-5, with the town itself a short detour off the freeway on the Swinomish Channel.
Is La Conner worth visiting outside tulip season?
Yes β the waterfront shops, galleries, and Pioneer Park's view of the Rainbow Bridge make it a pleasant stop year-round, just without the flower fields.
